More takers: CAT numbers grow by 5 per cent

The number of MBA aspirants aiming to enter premiere IIMs and other top B-schools in the country has swelled with the number of CAT vouchers sold this year increasing by nearly 5 per cent, according to the organizers.

Noida, India (prHWY.com) September 20, 2012 - The number of MBA aspirants aiming to enter premiere IIMs and other top B-schools in the country has swelled with the number of CAT vouchers sold this year increasing by nearly 5 per cent, according to the organizers.

According to the preliminary data released by Prometric India, after the last date (September 17) of CAT voucher sale, the number of vouchers sold this year was around 2.15 lakh. The number of CAT applicants last year was around 2.05 lakh.

"While a final consolidation is being done, preliminary figures reveal that around 2.15 lakh vouchers have been sold," said Soumitra Roy, managing director, Prometric India, the agency which is conducting computer-based CAT 2012.

The number of CAT 2012 applicants shows an upward trend after two years of a steady fall and a sluggish growth in 2011.

According to the agency, the final day of voucher sale proved to be a rush day for Axis Bank, the nodal centre for CAT vouchers, as close to 6,000 students brought CAT brochures on September 17.

"On the final day, close to 6,000 vouchers were sold, up 33 per cent compared with last year," Roy said.

Candidates, who have purchased vouchers and are yet to register, have until 11.59 pm on Wednesday, 19 September, to complete their registration and scheduling process.
CAT received 2.05 lakh registrations in the previous year. Out of 2.05 lakh candidates, 1.85 lakh took the test. The number of aspirants who registered in 2010 was 2.04 lakh. In 2009, about 2.41 lakh students had signed up for the exam.

Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Kozhikode is conducting the CAT this year.

The registration process had started from July 30. The computer-based CAT 2012 will be held in a window of 21 days, from October 11 to November 6, 2012.
