Gem State Diesel Announces Fall 'Fix Up Your Rig' Event
Gem State Diesel, the premier diesel engine repair and service shop in the Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Caldwell, Idaho, area, is proud to announce the start of its Fall "Fix Up Your Rig" Event.

During the event, customers can get a free, comprehensive 24-point engine check-up and a 20 percent discount on non-synthetic lubricating oil and filter service. This offer includes premium products such as non-synthetic 15-40 weight Valvoline Fleet Oil. Diesel owners whose "check engine" lights have come on and who want a full engine diagnostic can get one from Gem State's master technicians for $59.95.
One of the greatest threats to diesel engine longevity, said a representative of Gem State, is improper oil and filter change intervals. "Just because the manual says to change your oil every few thousand miles doesn't mean that it's the best schedule for your diesel engine," he continued. "The numbers in the manual refer to ideal driving conditions, and that isn't always what your engine faces."
The Gem State specialist also cited statistics that suggests diesel engine life is shortened by as much as 20 percent when oil change intervals are too long. Factors that lead to faster oil deterioration include high engine heat, road dust that clogs the filtration system and towing heavy loads. "Think about what happens when you're doing hard work in hot, dusty conditions. It's tiring to you, and it's tiring to your engine."
Frequent trips with many short stops, engines with high mileage and cold weather conditions can also take a toll on oil longevity. Diesel engines, including the big brand names such as GMC-Chevy Duramax, Dodge-Cummins and Ford-Powerstroke, may require more frequent oil and filter changes when they work under these conditions.
Proper engine maintenance can extend a diesel engine's life, and regular oil inspections are a large part of that maintenance. An engine that has not been subjected to temperature extremes or frequent short trips may not need a change yet. An oil inspection from a qualified technician can determine that.
