2011 Saw Health Care Spending Increases

Richmond, VA (prHWY.com) October 13, 2012 - Richmond, Virginia - Per capita health care spending on those under age 65 with employer sponsored health insurance, including Virginia insurance, increased 4.6% to $4,547 in 2011, according to a new report from the Health Care Cost Institute. The 2011 increase is slightly more than the rise of 3.8% in 2010, but falls below the 5.8% increase in 2009.

Premium costs were not included in the report, which attributed most of the jump in per capita spending growth to price increases for care. Out-of-pocket spending for patients rose 4.6% to $735, while the number of people with employer sponsored Virginia insurance fell 0.3% to 156 million.

Inpatient per capita spending increased 4.8% to $963 in 2011, while outpatient care spending rose 6.8% to $1,245. The rate of growth for inpatient spending was higher in 2011 than in 2010, while the rate of outpatient spending dropped from 2010 to 2011.
