CAT Preparation Tips@ solving previous years' papers key to crack CAT: Expert
MBAUniverse.com conducted a Live Expert Chat on 'CAT 2012 so far' with Abhishek Gupta, academic head, Career Launcher.

Excerpts from the chat:
Q: Srirag: My CAT exam is scheduled on 18th October. Tell me what to do a day before the exam.
A: Revise fundamentals in Quant. Sleep well and make sure you carry the admit card and ID proof.
Q: Abhijit: Everyone is telling that the Quant section is tough & DI is lengthy. Is it true? How can I tackle them?
A: Quant questions in section 1 are not easy. It will be a good idea to revise all fundamentals. Pay more attention to algebra and geometry. In DI, questions are calculation intensive. In most DI questions, it is not necessary to reach the exact final answer. So, depending on the options, you can try solving the questions by approximation.
Q: Srirag: There are 10 questions in RC. The problem is, if we do one incorrect question, all the other questions become wrong. What should be the strategy?
A: Even in most difficult RC passages, at least one question is easy. It is not necessary to attempt all the questions in a set if you are not sure. Rather, pick and choose the question types that you are comfortable with (like questions based on specific details, etc). For greater accuracy, eliminate options by re-reading parts of the passage.
Q: Mahesh: Are the question types similar to the last year? I have around 10 days left for my exam, so will it be helpful to solve previous years' questions?
A: Solving previous year papers is very important. Focus on papers for the years 2000-2008.
Q: Ashish: I have heard some topics in the Quant section totally skip PC and probability, i.e. increasing questions in one section? How can we balance this during exam?
A: You can do nothing about the assortment of questions that you will get in the exam. The only thing you can do is to prepare well. You should revise fundamentals of all topics, but focus more on algebra and geometry. You should not skip a topic completely as you might get an easy question from it which can be done even with basic knowledge of concepts.
Q: Komal Sharraf: I think for coming exam the sections are getting tougher. What can we do to reduce stress?
A: Your percentile is based on your relative performance with respect to the rest of the test takers. So, it does not matter much even if the level of difficulty of the test changes. In days left for the test, revise fundamentals, do past year papers and relax.
Q: Ankit: I attempt a lot of questions without bothering about accuracy. I have attempted 27 questions each in both the sections without bothering about accuracy. What should I expect?
A: You have attempted a good number of questions. Now relax and focus on the next exam.
Q: Komal Sharraf: How many questions shall I attempt in the VA section?
A: You should focus on accuracy. The number of attempts in any test or slot will depend on the level of difficulty. For now, an attempt of 20-22 questions with about an 85 per cent accuracy is a good attempt.
Q: Sambit: My CAT exam is scheduled on October 18. Is it prudent to take a mock test before the day of the examination?
A: Revise fundamentals in Quant. Sleep well and relax.
Q: Gauri Shankar Ohdar: Is it true DI part is more tricky and difficult from others year? Should we leave this section or attempt?
A: DI questions are not difficult but they may be calculation intensive. As I have already advised, in absence of a "none of the above" option, questions can be done by approximation. So, you should surely attempt these questions.
Q: Komal Sharraf: Share the study plan for the last two weeks before CAT 2012.
A: Revise fundamentals in Quant. Solve all available past year papers. Take two mocks per week. Relax and take care of yourself.
