Maunganui, New Zealand (prHWY.com) October 22, 2012 - You don't have to go to India to know how Indian curry tastes like. It's served all over the world for its deliciously spicy flavor. That very distinct taste of Indian curry is produced by a substance called curcumin, derived from the ginger-liker turmeric herb (curcuma longa). But this member of the ginger family is barely just a curry spice, because experts say it exhibits powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-carcinogenic properties. It seems that curcumin is one of the most powerful herbs to fight chronic diseases the same way it captures taste buds for its exotic but palatable taste.

Curcumin exhibits very potent antioxidant properties, rendering protection to the cells against free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable oxygen species that damages the DNA of the cells and causes fats to go rancid. As much as we would want to avoid accumulating these free radicals, they are produced from normal metabolic processes occurring inside the human body. More free radical accumulates from pollution, smoking, and unhealthy diet like those rich in preservatives. Antioxidants like curcumin help prevent the integrity of the cells by providing addition oxygen atoms to free radicals to render them safer. Curcumin's antioxidant protection prevents chronic diseases associated with free radical damage like arthritis, macular degeneration, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, and a whole lot more.

Curcumin naturally fights bad cholesterol, keeping them from damaging the arterial walls. Bad cholesterol normally attaches to the arterial lining, hardening and damaging them, resulting to a condition called atherosclerosis. As the arteries harden and lose it flexibility, blood flow becomes more difficult and needs more pressure. The complications of atherosclerosis are the most common cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, myocardial infarction or heart attack, coronary arteries, and in worse cases, cerebrovascular accident or stroke. It also prevents platelet aggregation or blood clot which further prevents any of these serious cardiovascular health problems. Anyone diagnosed to be at risk or already suffering from any of these medical conditions can benefit from regularly taking curcumin supplements.

Curcumin benefits also extend to diabetics. It is thought to help neutralize blood sugar levels for the relief of diabetic symptoms. Patients with diabetes experience increased thirst, increased urination, sudden weight loss, blurring of vision, and many others. The scary thing about diabetes is its complications like kidney failure, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic neuropathy. Curcumin supplements can help relieve disease-causing inflammation like that in arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. It also possesses strong anti-bacterial action, preventing Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Styphylococcus aureus, Trichophyton gypseum, and Salmonella paratyphi from causing infectious diseases. And lastly, studies on rats revealed that taking curcumin lowers incidences of colon cancer and some other malignancies.
