Nintendo is almost synonymous with gaming consoles
Nintendo is almost synonymous with gaming consoles since it first released the Color TV game in 1977. After 35 years Nintendo is still a major player the gaming console world- both handheld and no handheld.

There is only one area of the DS consoles that has to be looked after. The consoles have very little internal memory capacity. Which means you will not be able to keep to much content in it. To store new content like a new game, you will have to delete the previously loaded one. This not only makes it a problematic gadget to use but also limits its functions. This issue can be resolved and the best performance of a DS console can be brought out, by using an external storage unit.
These storage devices are known as R4 card. Though there are some other types of storage devices as well, the R4 cards are by far the most popular of them. Every model of the DS has a specific version of R4 card that is compatible with each console of the DS series. These are very powerful devices that increase the storage capacity of the consoles, thus allowing you a more wholesome experience. There is a specific slot on the consoles where the card is inserted. With an increased memory, you can now store multiple games, applications, videos, audio files- turning the gaming console into a multimedia device.
The R4i is a version of the R4 cards that was built for the DSi model but it also supports the previous DS models. Performance wise it is pretty solid. The backwards compatibility factor of the R4i card is quite advantageous for users as it allows them to upgrade their consoles without having to change their R4 cards.
However even this card will not work on one particular model. That is the latest 3DS model that came out in 2010. Since this console is different from all others, being a 3D gaming device, it supports only one card- The R4 card for 3DS. Because of its technological advancement, the card will support some older models, but its performance wont be reliable. It is safe to use the R4 3DS only with the Nintendo 3DS console.
All R4 cards need a micro SD memory card with it to function. The memory card contains the software and all other files stored by you and the R4 card works as a digital adapter that helps in the fast transfer of files to and from the Nintendo consoles. The R4 cards have become an essential component of all Nintendo DS consoles. Therefore make sure you have a genuine R4 card to use with your favorite Nintendo.
