Studies show that in 2004, of about 18 million Canadians reported being in an abusive relationship. By 2009, that number had increased to 20 million. Reports suggest that younger Canadians are more likely to make a claim of spousal violence as compared to older Canadians. Those between the ages of 25 and 34 were three times more likely to say they had been physically or sexually assaulted than those aged 45 and older.

Researchers believe that, in part, a spike in the number of reported incidents of abuse may have occurred as people became more comfortable coming forward to police with allegations. In 2009, victims of spousal violence were more likely to report an incident than in 2004.

Many Canadians report having been a victim of emotional and financial abuse by their spouse. In 2004, almost 17% of Canadians said they had experienced such abuse in their current or previous relationship. Criticism and name calling were the most common form of reported abuse.

Research indicates that spousal violence is also prevalent among ex-spouses and partners. In 2009, 17% of Canadians who reported being in contact with an ex-spouse reported enduring abuse.
