IIM Lucknow@ Sense of togetherness binds students @ IIM Lucknow campus
An interesting feature of the IIM-L campus is that a sense of fellow feeling is omnipresent there

Picturesque campus: The campus itself is charming. Spread over 185 acres, the IIM-Lucknow campus is set in a serene environment, and not only provides an excellent ambience for the community's academic endeavours but also provides it with an opportunity to unwind. Replete with ergonomically-designed buildings, well-manicured lawns and stands of large trees on a beautiful virgin site make it one of the most beautiful campuses in India. It doesn't take long to fall in love with the place.
The ambience fosters a sense of togetherness as well. "Despite being an extremely competitive place, it has a culture of high collaboration among students. It is common to find students spending hours before exams trying to help each other through remedial sessions, study groups and so on," said Nikhil Shanker, a second year student.
Busy life: Another unique feature is the involvement of students. All the activities, from Manfest (a management fest with a budget of over Rs 1.5 crore) to running of the mess (serving 1,000 people daily with an annual budget of Rs 3 crore), are managed by them.
"Everything is run by students. So, there is transparency in the way the system functions. Everything is managed in-house by people residing on the campus," said Srishti Tanwar, a first year student.
On a typical day, students of IIM-Lucknow, like any other management schools, keep themselves busy with classes, group discussions, project work, case study competition, students' council works and organising events.
"We have three major events in a year apart from a host of other competitions and events. In October, we have Varschasva, a sports and cultural fest with participation from colleges across the country. In November, comes Index, a disguised market research fair where students work on live projects offered by leading companies such as P&G, HUL, Cadbury, Nestle, etc to understand consumer perception. In January, we organise Manfest, a business fest with participation from leading corporates and top colleges. Its budget is more than Rs 1.5 crore," informed Shanker.
With every passing year, Varchasva is growing in scale and stature. This year, IIM Lucknow organized 'HallaBol', a street play competition. Rather than doing it within the campus, the event was conducted in adjacent villages. The idea was to take the street play back to its roots and spread awareness among villagers. It gave management students an opportunity to go beyond classrooms and touch the lives of the common man.
Being entirely student driven, these events provide learning experience for both organizers and participants. Most of these tasks are taken up by students staying in the hostel located inside the campus.
Gender equality: At IIM-L, there is now a greater focus on gender equality. The institute admitted a record 167 girl students in its PGP and PGP-ABM batches for the 2012-14 academic session. The number of girl students witnessed a two-and-a-half-fold rise compared with the previous year. The new batch of 453 students has 37 per cent girl students as against 14 per cent in the previous batch.
Facilities: The institute is known for continuously renovating its sporting facilities by adding new individual and team sporting arenas to facilitate and foster overall development of the sporting spirit among students. It has a state-of-the-art gymnasium, pool tables and board games in all the hostels, indoor badminton courts & outdoor facilities for tennis, basketball and volleyball. The campus also has a swimming pool and squash court. The library, spread over 30,000 sqft, is two storied, air conditioned and has a functionally designed building with seating capacity for 250 readers. It acts as the main learning resource centre for the institute. The campus also has a medical centre providing basic health care services round the clock.
Refreshments: The campus has some cool hang-out zones and eateries where students relax, rejuvenate and unwind after monotonous daily routine. In fact, there are two student-run canteens, 'Just Tea' and 'G&B', in the campus. If one gets bored with these, Fauji Dhaba and Guptaji Store are the ideal alternatives. As usual, light chats as well as serious discussion on study-related matters accompany foods and drinks.
