You can now check the progress of your tax return
Our Progress of return enquiry tool will give you the status of the income tax return you have lodged for the latest financial year (ending 30 June).

The tool provides information about the tax returns of individuals only, not of companies, trusts or partnerships. It does not provide information about amendments to tax returns.
The service is free and available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your search will take only a few minutes.
Conduct your search
Go to Progress of return and type in your tax file number (TFN).
You can find your TFN:
1) on your income tax notice of assessment
2) on correspondence we have sent to you
3) on your payment summary - for example, from your employer
4) through your tax agent.
Important changes for the 2012-13 financial year
From 1 July 2012, we will aim to finalise individual electronic current year tax returns within 12 business days of receipt. If we are unable to finalise your electronically lodged return within 30 calendar days of receipt, we will inform you by email, SMS, phone call, or letter. If we notify you by letter, it may take up to 36 days for you to receive the letter from when you lodged your tax return.

Individuals
If you can't find your TFN, or for information about earlier-year individual income tax returns:
1) phone 13 28 61 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday
2) visit one of our shopfronts (phone 13 28 61 to make an appointment).
Companies, trusts or partnerships
For information about company, trust or partnership returns, phone 13 28 66 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.
Checking progress of returns by phone
If you do not want to use our Progress of return tool, you can use our self-help phone service:
1) phone 13 28 61 and choose option 2 then option 1
2) enter your tax file number.
Alternatively, you can ask one of our customer service representatives to conduct a search for you.
If you do not speak English well and need help from the ATO, phone the Translating and Interpreting Service on 13 14 50.
If you are deaf, or have a hearing or speech impairment, phone the ATO through the National Relay Service (NRS) on the numbers listed below:
1) TTY users, phone 13 36 77 and ask for the ATO number you need
2) Speak and Listen (speech-to-speech relay) users, phone 1300 555 727 and ask for the ATO number you need
3) internet relay users, connect to the NRS on www.relayservice.com.au and ask for the ATO number you need.
