Pathways to Permanent Residency

Melbourne, Australia (prHWY.com) November 4, 2012 - Planning on moving to Australia and want to be sure you are on track to gaining permanent residency in Australia?

For many migrants, they usually tend to initially qualify to enter Australia on a temporary Australian visa and then make a subsequent permanent visa applciation onshore. There are multiple visa categories under which an applicant and their eligible family members may obtain permanent residency in Australia.

Permanent residency in Australia is achieved by making a General Skilled, Employer Sponsored, Business Owner, Family or Student Australian Visa application.

Under General Skilled Migration visa the Skilled-Regional (Residence) subclass 887 visa one type of permanent visa. It is specifically designed for certain provisional Skilled Migration visa holders who have lived for two years and worked full time for at least 12 months in a Specified Regional Area of Australia.

You can also obtain permanent residency via the subclass 457 visa via Employer Nomination Scheme (856/119). The Direct Entry Stream will require amongst other things a positive Skills Assessment. If you have been working for your sponsoring employer on your 457 Australian visa for at least 2 years you can apply via the Temporary Transition Scheme pathway without the need for a Skills Assessment.

Students on eligible student visas who have met the Australian study requirement in the last six months can apply for the Skilled Subclass 885 or subclass 886 Visa. This will grant Australian Permanent Residency and an application must be made before the 31st of December 2012.

For business owners under 55 who have been able to set up (or purchase) a business within the four years in Australia. The business must have reached a turnover of AUD$300,000 within the 12 months prior to applying for permanent residency, and have AUD$250,000 of assets. The company also need to evidence that they have employed at least two full time (or equivalent part time) Australian citizen or permanent resident. Take note that you must have been in Australia for at least one year in the two years immediately before applying or being sponsored by a state or territory government.

Family Migration also makes provisions for obtaining Permanent Residence in Australia. It involves being sponsored by a relative that is either a citizen of Australia or a permanent resident of Australia. There are a number of pathways for permanent residency in Australia for fiancés, partners, children, parents and other family members of eligible Australian sponsors. These include but are not limited to Permanent Partner, Aged Parent, Contributory Parent, Child and Remaining Relative Visas.
