Health Benefits of Astaxanthin - Protect yourself against Computer Vision Syndrome
Computer Vision Syndrome is one of the latest "side effects" of our tweeting-texting-Facebook society - Count me in "I am also guilty."

Health Benefits Of Astaxanthin - A large study conducted by the National Eye Institute and published in the December 2009 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology found that the prevalence of nearsightedness (myopia) among Americans has increased from 25 percent to 41.6 percent of the population over the past 30 years; this is an increase of more than 66 percent. Also, among people with 12 or more years of formal education, the prevalence of myopia is now as high as 60 percent.
What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer Vision Syndrome is a constellation of visual and ophthalmological conditions, ranging from; Decreased vision, difficulty in focusing, eye strain, burning, stinging, photophobia, headaches and muscular-skeletal complaints (see below).
Percentage of people with vision problems who suffer from the specific Computer Vision Syndrome symptoms
Eye Fatigue + Tired Eyes: 64.95%
Eye Strain: 48.83%
Headaches: 45.68%
Neck / Shoulder Pain: 44.0%
Irritation Of Eyes: 37.5%
Itching / Burning Of Eyes: 34.38%
Back Pain: 34.38%
Blurry vision: 30.48%
General Fatigue: 25.58%
Tension: 25.16%
Arm / Wrist / Shoulder Pain: 25.0%
Tearing: 14.78% www.aoa.org
What are the main factors contributing Computer Vision Syndrome?
The main factor is obviously the amount of time staring at the computer screen, this leads to eye-strain, from the intense, fixed focal length between the eyes and screen.
Angle of gaze (AOG) - Is the angle that we view the computer screen influences our vision and affects of our eyesight. This AOG is a combination of angles and distances measured from the center of the screen to the eye, center of screen to the floor and the center of screen to the edge of the eye.
Dry eyes, we blink far less when staring at the computer screen (normally 18 times per minute versus only 4 times when viewing a computer screen) - this creates dry membranes which are normally moist, lubricated and nourished. Symptoms of dry eyes include: burning or itching or even inflammation as the condition progresses.
Illumination both from the brightness of the screen and the reflections from the surrounding (ambient) light, both of which can cause refraction and produce eye strain.
The humidity of the work space also plays a role in Computer Vision Syndrome. Low humidity results in increased evaporation of tears and results in desiccation of the moist eye surface.
Although Computer Vision Syndrome affects us all, the research and emphasis has naturally and justifiably turned to our children, who simply regard the computer as just another body part and will have to deal with computers for a whole life-time.
Consider this:
Over 94 percent of American families with children have a computer in the home with access to the Internet.
The amount of time children ages 8 to 18 devote to entertainment media (including computer and video games) each day has increased from 6.19 hours to 7.50 hours.
In 2009, 29 percent of American children ages 8 to 18 had their own laptop computer, and kids in grades 7 through 12 reported spending an average of 90 minutes sending and receiving texts each day
It is estimated that one in five teens sends 200 texts a day, with the average being 60 texts.
Safety guidelines from the American Optometric Association (AOA)
Have your child's vision checked. Before starting school, every child should have a comprehensive eye exam, including near-point (computer and reading) and distance testing.
Limit the amount of time your child spends at the computer without a break. Encourage kids to take 20-second breaks from the computer every 20 minutes to minimize the development of eye focusing problems and eye irritation. (Some eye doctors call this the "20-20 rule").
Check the ergonomics of the workstation. For young and small children, make sure the computer workstation is adjusted to their body size. The recommended distance between the monitor and the eye for children is 18 to 28 inches. Viewing the computer screen closer than 18 inches can strain the eyes. The top of the computer screen should be at eye level and the screen should be positioned and angled to avoid any glare.
Check the lighting. To reduce glare, windows and other light sources should not be directly visible when sitting in front of the monitor. Reduce the amount of lighting in the room to match the computer screen.
Teach your child computing skills, including how to touch-type with minimum force and how to use keyboard shortcuts to reduce mouse use.
Teach your child to respond appropriately to discomfort during computer use, including taking more frequent breaks and, if symptoms persist, to seek advice from an eye care specialist.
Help protect yourself with dietary supplements
An important addition for those individuals over 10 years of age would be the inclusion of a natural dietary supplement, known to protect vision and eyes, preferably one with evidence-based research. One particular carotenoid with over 500 peer reviewed articles is natural Astaxanthin, an outstanding antioxidant with extraordinary eye protective properties.
Natural astaxanthin crosses the blood retinal barrier (BRB) and therefore works where it is needed. Astaxanthin has been shown in clinical studies to protect:
The photo receptors of the retina
Palpebral, Cilliary & extraocular eye muscles from fatigue & strain
The macula from free radical damage (cause of macular degeneration)
The lens from cataract formation
From iritis, uveitis and other inflammation conditions.
A recent study from Japan showed that 6 mg of astaxanthin each day consistently improved visual sharpness, pupillary constriction and also relieved eye fatigue in persons using computer monitors. Individuals experienced improvement in "difficulty focusing on near objects, eye strain, blurred vision, and also shoulder and neck pain."
