Two-time Global Music Awards Winner presents a World Premiere at the Madison Arts Festival

Maestro Brown is expected to attend the concert and make an appearance at the post-performance reception.

Madison, FL (prHWY.com) November 5, 2012 - Tampa Bay, FL - Conductor Composer Stephen P Brown recently received the Award of Merit for Composition from the Global Music Awards (GMA) for one of his 2012 compositions that will be premiered in Madison, NJ over Thanksgiving weekend.

"After seeing the McCormick Percussion Group at the University of South Florida had won an award for an album, I thought 'why not?' and not only did my two entries get through the nomination round, but they both won their respective categories!" said Brown.

Brown's chamber music piece "Wind Quintet 1" is traditional in style and structure, reflected by its unassuming title, but occasional twists, turns, and folk-like harmonies belie Brown's finger on the pulse of our confused arts life in contemporary USA. The haunting second movement is subtitled "in memory of SW" and includes a dance-like section reminiscent of a peasant funeral march that could have been included in Jerry Bock's "Fiddler on the Roof" before Tevye's dream.

The last movement begins with several attempts to settle into old-fashioned familiarity which Brown says "reflects how the classical music industry is desperately trying to hold onto the way it operated in the last century," and ends with an exciting push towards progress and an emphatic cry of frustration.
According to the Los Angeles based GMA, the piece exhibits outstanding craft and creativity, and "stands above other music."


Ironically, "Wind Quintet 1" has not yet been heard by the general public. Its World Premiere is scheduled for performance on Friday, November 23 at 7:30pm as part of the Madison Arts Festival's annual concert by Zephyr Winds. Jane Rondin, French horn player and founding member, is thrilled to present Brown's new work. "At our first reading we fell in love with the folky nature of the piece. The tone colors and rhythms are fun and really interesting. I was delighted that Stephen chose Zephyrs to premier his latest composition, and I know the audience will fall in love with it," said Rondin.

The last time he performed in New Jersey was for the World Premiere in Morristown of his solo piano piece "Not Rach 3" played by Jared Tafaro of the College of St Elizabeth. Extra seating was required for that concert despite a snow blizzard, and was also broadcast live by Morristowngreen.com

The other piece of Brown's music recognized by the GMA was "Tapestry Tampa Bay" which won the Award of Excellence for an Original Score. The six-movement piece was premiered in Safety Harbor, Florida in March 2012 and has been viewed over 23,000 times on YouTube. It "is an affectionate tribute to the distinct wonders of the Tampa Bay area, from the beaches to the local arts scene to the inexplicable number of churches. He even included a movement called "Grouper," in honor of the fish that strikes him as so funny," said Dr. Thomas Baker, GMA Competition Chairperson.
