Keira Knightley's Wardrobe Fit for a Princess in New Movie reports Marlows-Diamonds.co.uk

Fashions, jewelry put at $2 million

San Francisco, CA (prHWY.com) November 15, 2012 - San Francisco, CA- Keira Knightley was decked out in jewels and designer fashions for her role as Anna Karenina.

To portray the Russian princess from the 19th century, Knightley donned gowns drawn from Balenciaga and Chanel diamonds worth $2 million.

Costume designer Jacqueline Durran said they were re-creating the aura of the historical Anna Karenina.

"Never in my experience on film sets have I seen anyone with such a range of diamonds and pearls," Durran told Women's Wear Daily. "But I have to say it was very useful for Keira to have at her fingertips all this fine jewelry, as Anna would."

The work written by Leo Tolstoy in 1877 was adapted for the silver screen by Joe Wright. The filming took 12 weeks and ranged over 100 sets.

Wright wanted the movie to have a modern touch, so he rejected using period costumes. He directed Durran to use styles from the 1950s.

"When we were discussing what color kimono Keira should wear, we had five different heads of various departments," Durran said. "It is a good thing to say that, because it shows how important each aesthetic is to his films."

The costume guru also sought inspiration from a 19th-century English designer. Durran visited the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to study Charles Frederick Worth. He is thought of as one of the founders of Paris' haute couture.

Durran also drew from Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Lanvin.

Knightley had a say in what her character wore, but Durran insisted that the actress never disliked a dress.

Durran's other contributions to the film included the wardrobes for Levin (Domhnall Gleeson), Count Alexei Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Alexei Karenin (Jude Law).

The London V&A museum's Hollywood Costume exhibition has on display a purple gown that Knightley wore in the movie.
