Automaker moves forward with plans for plug-in hybrids

New Jersery, NJ (prHWY.com) April 18, 2011 - In 2012, Toyota plans to release a plug-in hybrid variant of the Prius. The automaker has taken several steps to prepare for this new model, including the launch of a partnership with the New York Department of Transportation and the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey. This demo program is to raise awareness of the technology and to also show off the vehicle's usefulness on the streets. Toyota continues to move forward with plans for the Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) by preparing to release an in-home charging station which every owner will need.

With the all-new Prius PHV from Toyota, Staten Island drivers will get a vehicle that can fully charge in three hours with a 110-volt electric outlet, or in just ninety minutes with a 220-volt outlet. The PHV will run on electricity alone for 13 miles at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour! Beyond that distance, it will revert to its normal Prius hybrid mode.

Your Staten Island Toyota parts leader reports that the charging station for this PHV is priced up to $2,045 including installation charges. There will be two charging stations available: one to be mounted to an exterior wall and another to stay inside a garage. Toyota expects to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 units in the first year alone!
