Future bright orange for sheep thieves on the Isle of Mull

Mull, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) November 23, 2012 - Life on the beautiful Isle of Mull will be much tougher for sheep thieves thanks to good thinking on the part of farmers.

To prevent the sheep from getting stolen a farmer colored his sheep orange so that his sheep were uniquely identifiable. Sheep rustling has been on the rise on the island forcing the farmer to take such dire steps to protect his flock.

When lamb sales are high the region sees the price of each sheep to be around £140, explaining the stringent methods to protect the livestock. Farmer John Heard was driven to this idea after thieves pinched away around 200 sheep to sell for meat. After that with the increase in rising theft more and more farmers started dyeing their sheep.

After dyeing his sheep bright orange John found that his 250 blackface ewes were so highly visible that they could be easily spotted from a distance.

Mr Heard explained that he was fed up with losing sheep while roaming Dartmoor. His son James then gave him the idea to give the sheep an orange rinse. The result is a flock of odd looking sheep but Heard has not lost a single sheep since.

The sheep however seem undeterred by their current appearance.The dye used is non-toxic and eventually wears off without causing any kind of harm to the sheep.
