Research finds link between Diabetes and Periodontal Disease
The IDF research has suggested that periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting tissues around the teeth.

CHICAGO - November 27, 2012 - Periodontal disease and diabetes have two way relationships, as per the recent research of Diabetes Federation. The research shows that diabetes affects approximately 300 million people worldwide and this figure is increasing gradually.
Dr. Garland Anthony, MS, DDS, PhD, senior executive member of the Academy of Periodontology says, "Periodontal disease activates the inflammatory response of human body which can cause unhealthy blood sugar levels and ultimately have an affect on insulin sensitivity. By developing regular periodontal care, we can keep diabetes controlled." He further said that "I believe that these medical considerations will be helpful for all those medical professionals who treat diabetes patients. I also support the dental and medical communities, to provide the best care to our patients, they should work together."
The IDF research has suggested that periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting tissues around the teeth. The better treatment for periodontal disease can help in reducing the risk of developing diabetes and also control the blood sugar levels in diabetes patients.
According to the study, it is recommended that physicians dealing with the patients of diabetes should check the teeth for the primary signs of periodontal disease. Physicians should give awareness to their patients on how they can maintain good oral health to prevent this killer disease.
