Sanfrancisco, CA (prHWY.com) November 28, 2012 - San Francisco, CA- Statistics released by Malta's National Statistics Office (NSO) show that nearly 70,000 people were at the at-risk-of-poverty level in the Southern European island nation in 2011. That translates which translates to an increase of approximately 1.5% over the previous year's total.

Of that total, officially listed at 69,642 people, children below the age of 18 represented the highest at-risk-of-poverty group at 21.7%. That was closely followed by senior citizens age 65 and older at 18 percent.

The risk of poverty rate is divided into two sections: Those at risk of poverty monetarily and those at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The monetary at-risk-of-poverty level stood at 15.4% in Malta in 2011, up slightly by 0.4%, while the at-risk-poverty-or-social exclusion rate stood at 21.7% nationwide.

Overall, the rate for persons aged 18 to 64 stood at 13%.

The average gross household income in Malta in 2011 was €26,617 and disposable income was €22,403, both of which increased 3% over 2010.

The NSO averaged the household disposable income average nationwide to determine both the poverty level and to determine the number of people who fell below the poverty line. Nationwide, the poverty line stood at €6,517 with 63,593 income earners falling below that level.

Households with dependent children were more likely in the at-risk-of-poverty group than childless households, 18% and 12 %, respectively. Single-parent households were at the highest risk level at 47%.

A negative relationship between monetary poverty and work also showed up in the results. For example, households living with dependent children and having zero work intensity was at a whopping 79% while households with full work intensity and dependent children had relatively low incidence of the at-risk-of-poverty rate. The results were similar for households without dependent children.

As part of the study, respondents were asked whether or not they felt deprived of basic household items needed for day-to-day life. Of the nine items identified by the study, 17% indicated that lived in households that lacked at least three of those items.

Despite the increase, Malta's national figures are actually lower than the European Union average.
