Health Benefits of Astaxanthin - Antioxidant Nutritional Herbal Health Advantages
Astaxanthin, comes from a very particular microalgae, which ensures a very concentrated natural supply

Astaxanthin - Antioxidants are nature's cell guards. These amazing elements counter free radicals, preventing them from damaging the body's healthy cells. An over-abundance of free radicals is the major cause of chronic inflammation which leads to a host of health circumstances including heart disease and cancer.
Many substances have antioxidant properties. Certain vitamins, minerals and various micro-nutrients have been found to be powerful antioxidants.
What makes astaxanthin any better than other sources of these substances?
A large reason astaxanthin is so exciting is that besides being extremely powerful and beneficial, it is also very safe and never acts as a pro-oxidant
Top tips on brain health and Stress from Robert Corish MD
Doesn't it seem that we now live in a fast paced, eat on the run, "text you later" kind of world?
How many of us stop to smell the roses or listen to a bird chirping?
We are all too busy running around, looking at our watches trying to fit in as many tasks as possible before the day ends. If we are not careful, this chronic hurried lifestyle eventually turns into stress and then into health problems.
I remember during medical school being asked.... "What is the number one killer of people in the developed world?" "Heart disease" I dutifully answered.
"Stress!" was my professor's reply. Stress affects so many different physiological systems, the heart, the brain, immune system, digestion; essentially every function within the body is influenced by stress.
Here are some tips on protecting, probably our most important organ...the brain.
Especially during these times when we are seeing a dramatic increase in the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
The jury is still out on what really causes Alzheimer's disease, but what we do know is that poor circulation, inflammation and free radicals all contribute to conditions of mental decline, strokes and dementia.
Several factors that have been shown to accelerate and enhance the development of these debilitating mental conditions include;
Stress
Inflammation
Lifestyle and Dietary choices
Environmental and domestic toxins.
Each one of these factors deserves its own book category, however to remain brief and to the point, I will only outline some key features of each.
Stress
Health Benefits Of Astaxanthin - Stress affects everything in the body and is not always noticeable. Many times Stress slides under the radar and may only manifest itself in an unrelated symptom such as indigestion, neck pain or lack of concentration. There is no distinction between psychological stress and physiological stress, they are both connected and can cause changes in the circulation, heart rhythm, the immune response & hormonal levels. Stress can and does trigger inflammation. It is well known that Stress can cause depression, anxiety and forgetfulness (brain fog), therefore, stress can be labeled as the #1 contributor to mental decline.
Inflammation
Inflammation is a normal defensive mechanism for the body to fight against infectious agents, foreign particles and injury. However, the inflammation that I am referring to is 'silent inflammation', a low grade chronic inflammation caused by exposure to toxins such as tobacco smoke or chemical additives in foods and medicines, bacterial plaque on gums, stress related hormones and oxidized cholesterol. This silent type inflammation doesn't reveal itself in the form of a symptom, it simply smolders away creating a bigger problem down the road.
Strokes, Alzheimer's and dementia all consist of some degree of inflammation. This is important because we are exposed to many more triggers of inflammation than previous the generations.
Lifestyle choices
This really sets the stage for all of the other factors named as co-contributors to brain health decline, namely, our dietary choices, our social habits, our exercise regimen and our work-related stressors.
When I consider dietary choices, the first and foremost issue is QUANTITY. We eat too much, we eat oversized portions, we eat too frequently and we eat the wrong stuff!
Excess sugars, excess carbs, excess alcohol and the wrong kind of fats all stimulate inflammation. On top of this, we can add lack of exercise, weight gain and metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes), we are talking... "TURBO DEMENTIA."
Environmental/domestic toxins
This is probably the category that we have the least control over, however, it is important to be aware of the increasing discoveries that uncover the ugly truth about our modern world and the massive amounts of harmful chemicals that we are exposed to everyday like pesticides, herbicides, organic solvents, heavy metals (Mercury), and plasticides, to name a few. There are over ten thousand chemicals registered as food additives, and we probably sleep on beds that have been filled with foam sprayed with toxic flame retardants...similar to new carpets. We are surrounded by documented poisons! There is substantial evidence from research to suggest that environmental toxins not only contribute to general health problems (Cancer) but that they also play a significant role in the development of cognitive and brain conditions.
Some things we can do to protect ourselves
First things first...take control of stress levels. Look for, and become aware of triggers for stress, train yourself to downgrade the event. This may utilize simple avoidance tactics...i.e. avoiding stressful persons or situations or managing stress using predetermined responses such as deep breathing, positive visualization, or side-stepping confrontation.
Meditation, prayer, exercise and laughter are all well documented techniques to handle stress, grab one and master it.
Managing inflammation involves exercise, stress reduction, healthy eating and good restful sleep. An additional tool to prevent inflammation is dental hygiene. Plaque buildup on the gum-teeth interface has been shown to pass through the gums into the blood stream and set up areas of inflammation, especially in the heart and the arteries of the brain. These pockets of inflammation cause long term damage that can be avoided, therefore, daily flossing and professional dental cleaning is extremely important, not only for your mouth but also for your brain and heart!
Healthy foods, with plenty of fruits and veggies and omega-3 oils.
A good selection of antioxidants and supplements that have been shown to pass through the blood brain barrier should also be included. My choices are Astaxanthin 12 mg /day and Curcumin 500 mg/day.
I compliment these brain protectors with some additional supplements such as omega -3 oils 1000 mg/day and vitamin D3 1000 IU/ day
Restful sleep is another important tool in fighting stress and inflammation. It is during the restful phases of sleep that the immune-endocrine-hormonal system performs it's repair work, stomping out inflammation.
Toxins can be minimized and avoided by increasing our awareness of our surroundings and what we are eating and drinking. Therefore, organic food stuffs whenever possible and clean filtered water; avoid canned foods and artificial fillers, sweeteners etc. Ventilate homes and work places, and wear appropriate protective gear on the job- masks, goggles and gloves.
One final tip to protect and maintain our brain in top shape;...Keep the brain active! Reading is like jogging for the brain. Give the brain exercises, such as crosswords, Sudoku or brain teasers. Choose to learn a new topic, such as a language or sewing. Research has shown that nerves in the brain need activity to remain thick and healthy, when we don't exercise our brain, the nerves become thinned and fragile- leading to decline and memory loss. What are you waiting for...Get Going!
