Arawak Pictures Owner Sacha Sommer Announces Involvement in Haiti Reconstruction
Film producer and former Haiti resident Sacha Sommer has announced his personal and financial contributions to the relief and reconstruction efforts in the wake of the Haiti earthquake.

"The Haiti earthquake was by far the most challenging experience of my life. The aftermath generated a tension that even a knife could NOT cut through. With over 300,000 dead and most infrastructure reduced to rubble, the trauma was inescapable on all levels," said Sacha Sommer.
Sacha Sommer originally moved to Haiti in 1995 to work on his film about the island's invasion, which won him the Best Documentary Award from the French Institute in Port-au-Prince. As he returns to the island to help with the relief efforts, Sacha Sommer will be working with Hatian President Michelle Martelly's organization, Foundation Rose et Blanc, to deliver supplies, food, and access to medical care to victims of the earthquake. Sacha Sommer will also be contributing his directing and producing skills, and he will work with the Organization of Economic Development in Haiti to produce a film documenting the effects of the quake and reconstruction efforts since it struck.
"It is extremely important to get the word out around the world about how much this earthquake has affected the population of Haiti," remarked Sacha Sommer. "Because of the amount of poverty and lack of resources in Haiti, the people there really need as much help as possible, especially in the form of monetary donations to reputable organizations like the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders."
In terms of the film, he is creating a documentary about the destructive power of the earthquake, and the power of community in rebuilding. Sacha Sommer said, "I hope that this video I'm making in conjunction with OECD can help a wider audience understand the magnitude of damage that Haiti has been faced with, and the hardships that lie ahead in rebuilding and caring for those affected by the quake." The film, called "Haiti: Aftershock," is currently in post-production.
Sacha Sommer is also looking to turn his experiences into print as well. He stated: "Filmmaking has blessed me with travels and experiences exciting enough for a book." With this in mind, he is also in the process of publishing a photo book from the Haiti quake that will accompany the documentary.
