A brake and light inspection is a detailed assessment of a vehicle's brake and lighting systems. This test may be required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in the event that a car or truck has sustained damage as the result of an auto accident or vehicle theft. Some damage is difficult to see which is why this inspection may be required as a safety precaution to protect the driver, passengers, and other motorists.

The brake system will be checked for correct installation of all applicable hardware and proper functionality of all system components. The responsiveness of the brakes will also be tested along with the emergency brake. The brake hydraulic system must be in good working condition with no evidence of any fluid leaks. Next, it's on to the exterior lighting system which includes pretty much anything that is supposed to illuminate on the outside of the vehicle. The inspector will look for any cracked or cloudy lenses and ensure that all lights turn on and off appropriately. The headlights are a major focus of the inspection as they are measured for correct alignment and tested for adequate brightness.
