Falkland, United Kingdom (prHWY.com) December 17, 2012 - Falkland House School is a residential school for boys of all ages who

Olympic Torchbearer

Falkland House pupils and staff were proud to be represented in the Olympic Torch relay by first-year pupil Kieran Rae as the flame made its way across the United Kingdom.

Science teacher Garry Bryson had proposed Kieran as a candidate in view of the extraordinary efforts he had made to turn his life around after several years of non-attendance at school. The Olympic theme had begun earlier in the year by Mr. Bryson and school chef Adrian Stirling who entered 2 boys' menus in an Olympic menu competition.

Kieran's big day saw the whole school travel to Dunfermline to support him and help ensure the memories will live with him forever. We now have a display in the main hall featuring the original torch and a life size photo of Kieran that will continue to offer inspiration to others.have Additional Support Needs and who find it difficult to cope in a mainstream educational environment. We offer day, 39 and 52 week provision.

MSP Visits

Following on from our recent meetings at the Scottish Parliament (see our previous newsletter) we have had a couple of visits from MSPs.

Liam McArthur, the Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Orkney Islands who is the party spokesperson on Education and Young People and a member of the Education and Culture Committee, visited us just before the summer break. He left an extremely
favourable impression with both the boys and staff.

We were also fortunate to have Michael Russell, the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, visit us on 1st October. Mr. Russell, his private secretary Ms. Holton and Ms. Anderson from the Scottish Government discussed the aspirations and achievements of pupils before going round the school and meeting the pupils and staff. We would like to thank all parties concerned for their time and effort.

Refurbishment & Development

During August and September the school spent a frenzied 5 weeks refurbishing a number of areas around the school to accommodate a new 52 week residential unit and develop the independent living area for the older pupils. The senior boys moved downstairs to the newly christened 'Stormont' Unit (named by the pupils) and a new kitchen, dining room and utility room was created.

Classrooms were also included in the refurbishment stimulating and up-to-date resources available are to enrich the curriculum. The Science and Maths classrooms were first on the list and soon to follow will be a new learning area for Music and Art.

Autism Accreditation

We have now received our Autism Accreditation Report following our review from 21st to 23rd August. This report, together with any comments we may have, goes forward to a panel which will decide what further steps must be taken to gain Accredited
Status.

The school has found the programme to be a positive, reflective process which involves our whole community in self-evaluating and developing all aspects of the organisation. Already we can point improvements and developments made by a variety of groups and individuals which have had a positive impact on the education and care of our pupils.

National Trust Palace Project

Falkland Palace Head Gardener Sonia Ferras Mana and the school Science teacher Mr Bryson have joined forces to introduce the next interdisciplinary project to the curriculum. The Palace has received funding for 'Wildlife' projects and together with the general Palace garden maintenance which takes place at this time of year the pupils (and staff) will find themselves extremely busy.

As well as supporting the Biology course the project promotes learning beyond subject boundaries in a stimulating environment and offers a range of opportunities for personal development.

We wish pupils (and staff) the best of luck and hope this winter is a mild one!
