New Yearbooks Combine High School Memories with Town Events
High school yearbooks are often thick volumes that catalog an entire year's worth of events into one book, but a small town in Montana is revolutionizing the way the world thinks of yearbooks.

"The city of Blue River is such an integral part of the high school", explained Jane Miller, editor for the Blue River High School yearbook. "We decided that this year we would start a part yearbook, part city history book. That way when we look back at our time in high school, we remember what was going on in our city."
The yearbook will feature the typical section that all high school yearbooks feature. These sections include pictures of prom, football games, and other high school events. It will also feature sections of student and staff pictures.
"The whole yearbook looks just like a regular yearbook", explained Miller. "The only real difference is the section on the town. It's a new addition and something that we are trying out. We want to see the reaction and how it goes over with the school community."
The community section of the yearbook will feature pictures, stories and news from the community of Blue River. It will almost be like a yearlong look back that students can use to remember what happened in the city.
"The city is a major part of the school system", said John Denver, city council representative for Blue River. "I think it would make sense to include sections on what happened in the city."
One of the major reasons that Jane Miller decided to try this new yearbook style was because of the lack of city history books. Blue River only has two books dedicated to showing people what happened in the city.
"I was really surprised that there weren't a lot of books that detailed events in Blue River", said Miller. "I think these new yearbooks could be a great start to keeping a detailed record of what goes on in the city."
The new yearbooks will be distributed to the class of 2013. After they are distributed the yearbook committee will conduct a survey to see how the students liked the yearbooks, and if this new community feature will continue.
"Our goal is to give the students what they want", said Miller. "If they don't like the idea, then we'll stop it. If they do like it, then we'll continue. It's as easy as that."
