The top five horror movies of 2012 start with a mainstream feature. Sinister debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Texas.

1. Sinister: This can be named as one of the best horror movies of 2012. It was first viewed in Texas in the Southwest festival. This was actor Ethan Hawke's another appearance in a horror movie after the year 2009. He plays the role of a writer who gets to know a secret about his home. Things get worse when he saw box of movies in the attic. It was a thriller and gets better and better as the movie progresses. There were some unnatural sequences in his house and the sinister creates disturbance at some of the most unexpected places. The actor has to take different steps to keep his family and house safe. This movie was able to create an impact on the people and Hawke's character was well accepted. The film has a totally different ending and doesn't provide and keeps the viewers still till the end. The climax is excellent and won accolades from the critics too.

2. The cabin in the Woods: This movie revolves around some supernatural power and was premiered along with Sinister. The plot is different and brings Chris Hemsworth as the main lead. The story of the movie is based on the holiday spent around the woods. The final scenes are the best part of the movie and at the end the creatures run havoc on the cast. The comic moments along with the scary ones make it much more interesting and balance the movie well.

3. Dark Shadows: It would be unfair if one does not mention Dark shadows in the list of best horror movies of 2012. Johnny Depp plays the role of a vampire and attracts huge number of audience. The film has some dark story lines along with some humor. The film is mainly based on the adventures of the main cast i.e. Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer plays the role of a distant relative of Depp and controls the family when he returns after 200 years. The film has some funny scenes and is a mixture of dark comedy and humor. The director Tim Burton is little experimental in his movie and tries out different ways to present the horror movie to the audience.

4. Paranormal Activity 4: The film is based on the dysfunctional family of Katie and has some excellent twists in the plot. The main problem starts when the neighbor of the house brings chaos in the house. There are moments that make it much better than the previous versions of this franchise and the camera moments are the best part of the movie.

5. The Pact: The movie presents the haunted genre in a refreshing way and is worth a watch. It surely deserves a place in the list of best horror movies of 2012. Things mainly go wrong when Nicole tries to bury her mother and is involved in a video conference with her daughter.
