About buying a John 5 Tele!!!

Lowa, IA (prHWY.com) December 20, 2012 - Different guitarists have different attitudes towards their favorite personal axes. SRV played his Number One guitar to death. He recorded with it and gigged with it. He wasn't afraid of what would happen to it on the road, so he used it everywhere. Others leave their "one and only's" back home for recording and special events, and carry around a bunch of essentially disposable guitars when on tour.

John 5 seems to bear a combination of these two attitudes. On the one hand, he is very protective of certain Teles of his, and admits to using them sparingly. But at the same time, he isn't so much of a cork sniffer that he won't entertain a crowd with a $200 Squier, particularly if it's his signature model. And having access to an unlimited supply of cheap Squier signature Teles certainly makes touring a lot less stressful, I'm sure.

Having said that, I would venture to guess that the average Squier J5 signature Tele (I'm referring specifically to the new one coming out in May) will not really compare to his Custom Shop prototype Tele upon which it is based, at least not in terms of build quality or components. I don't enjoy adopting a cynical posture, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Tele he is playing "at home" in that video was the finest specimen from the Squier prototyping shop that Fender could send to him for testing and showing off in video teasers like that one. If only everyone could get that kind of personalized attention from Fender to the Squiers they buy...

And I also imagine that if we all had his talent, we could sound awesome playing $200 budget guitars through $200 budget amps too. He is a great example of the simple truth that great tone is in the hands (and brain), and not in the gear. But for the rest of us, well, the path of least resistance is found with higher-end equipment. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
