Section Three - Creating Motiv-Action

Many would agree that being motivated in the office or workplace is the most rewarding and most difficult aspect of work. Buddha said "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it. That's the mark of a true professional." According to Mark Twain, "The secret of success is making your vocation your vacation." And, simply put by Maya Angelou, "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." After the business moving is complete, employees may certainly be motivated by the opportunity to work in a new space that is more conducive to the company's needs and their own. However, having these motivational tips at your disposal can help turn around a demotivated employee. Utilizing a motivating vocabulary, peer support, and a connect-to-success leadership style are three tools that can be used to increase motivation in the office.

1) Increasing motivation in staff after your business moving does not have to be a difficult time-consuming task. Likely, you already utilize a lot of successful methods on a day to day basis, and taking a bit of extra time to make the effort is an investment in the future of your company. The first step to keeping up staff morale is to know how your words can influence other people. This isn't a tool to be used to coddle staff, but rather to respect staff enough to increase their confidence. Ideally, this will result in empowered employees who feel that their contribution is important to the company, thus increasing the success in their tasks. Even if you have some stress built up from starting over with your office moving, remembering simply to say please, thank you, and to commend a job well done to your staff can go a long way in ensuring they stay motivated.

2) Peer support can be a great aide in motivating your staff. After your business moving, it would be beneficial for your staff to be able to communicate openly and clearly with each other to stay on schedule for success. To ensure a well-planned schedule, consider the creation of empowerment teams in your office structure. This helps define and break down the goals of the organization by having groups of employees responsible for specific tasks to ensure success in a particular area. Each team would have authority to make decisions within their division, thereby increasing the use of each employee's strengths and encouraging growth in weak areas. They can be designed to work on a specific project, work daily in a unit, or be responsible for increasing customer satisfaction on a daily basis. While this does create independent employees, keep in mind that management support is always necessary. From the initial training and clear explanation of the purpose and structure of the empowerment team, to follow up training through courses on group dynamics and people skills, support of management is essential in creating a team. After your office relocation, you can also determine whether tools such as a corporate blog or a page on Facebook or Twitter can be useful in connecting your employees in positive ways to better the work environment. If you choose to do so, ensure guidelines are posted to keep professionalism at the forefront. And don't forget the small stuff. A well timed coffee or even a lunch barbeque are small things that go a long way with people and make them happy to work with your company.

3) Involving staff in success is a creative way to increase their understanding of company goals and objectives, as well as ensuring they know the importance of their contribution. Two widely successful and more common methods of accomplishing this are rewarding with bonuses upon completion of certain goals, and sharing how your company's successes match up with industry standards on a regular basis. Two more involved methods are to educate your staff and increase industry interest by attending trade shows and having weekly meetings on industry news, and building success with success. To do the latter, find ways to constantly celebrate the completion of goals and other successes. For example, celebrate your first month after your business moving and how things are coming together, or a new product/service launch, or 10 years in business. The possibilities are endless, and with a bit of conscious effort, the rewards can equally be endless.

Ultimately, motivation takes action. Having the motivation to come to work and complete duties is essential to initial success. However, consider that through taking steps to ensure your staff stay motivated, you are opening the door to attaining 5%, 15%, maybe even 50% more sales, more creativity, more hard work, more dedication, and more success overall. The Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, said "We have more possibilities available in each moment than we realize." Utilizing motivation tools in the work place can help make the best imagined possibilities, realities.
