Lowa, IA (prHWY.com) December 24, 2012 - The Gibson SG guitar was released in 1961, and has become an iconic symbol of rock music over the last 50 years.The SG was originally designed as a variation to the Les Paul and was temporarily known as the Les Paul SG (Solid Guitar) until Les Paul requested the removal of his name.
The SG Features a thin, flat-topped, solid mahogany body and a double cutaway for easy access to all frets. With this simpler design, the cost of the SG was significantly lower than the Les Paul upon its release. Similar to the Les Paul, the Gibson SG has a Tune-O-Matic bridge and two humbucker pickups. When launched, the Gibson SG was offered in four versions, each at different price points to appeal to all budgets. These versions included the single pickup SG Junior, the SG Special, SG Standard and the three pickup SG Custom, all of which are still available today.

The SG's 'devil horn' cutaways, and its loud, warm tone have made it appeal to many rock guitarists, most notably, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa and Eric Clapton. In 1988, the Gibson-owned company Epiphone started producing modestly priced versions of Gibson models in Asia, including the SG, and now offers seven different SG variations, like the G-310 and G-400. These Epiphone SGs feature different hardware and wood types to their Gibson counterparts, while still offering impressive quality and performance.
