DIVORCE FILING RATES CLIMB FOR THOSE OVER 50
After extensive research by two sociologists at Bowling Green State University, it was discovered that 1 in 4 people who divorce today are over the age of 50.
(prHWY.com) December 31, 2012 - New York, NY -- After extensive research by two sociologists at Bowling Green State University, it was discovered that 1 in 4 people who divorce today are over the age of 50.

The United States has the highest divorce rate in the world, with an estimated 45% of marriages expected to end in divorce. Sociologists, Susan L. Brown and I-Fen Lin decided to conduct an analysis based on the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data since there hasn't been any recent data about divorce since 1990. Their goal was to document the trends and patterns of the risk of divorce among older adults.

They found several trends from their research including the following:

Between 1990 and 2008, the divorce rate has doubled for those over the age of 50.
For every 1000 marriages of adults 50 and older, nearly 10 experienced divorce in 2008.
In 1990, less than 10% of all divorces were from the 50 and over demographic.
Older adults who divorce tend to have less education than those who remain married and more education than those who've become widowed.
Those who divorce are disproportionally involved in higher order marriages.
The proportion of the elderly population that is divorced has more than doubled since 1980, but this measure does not reveal whether the incidence or risk of divorce among older adults has shifted over time.

These statistics raise concerns about the connection of later-life divorce and well-being. More research is needed to prove if a correlation is present between the two. Family and friends of loved ones who divorce later in life will surely be concerned about them living alone and without physical and financial support from their former spouses. There's also some speculation of greater demand for support from social service agencies and nonprofits to assist these newly single seniors.

For seniors who plan on terminating a marriage, completing divorce filing forms is a must. There are many options to choose from and some can be quite costly. Visiting a legal documentation preparer will help alleviate any confusion about divorce filing and can help save money.
