The Council on Accreditation is an international, independent, non-profit, behavioral healthcare and child and family service accrediting group. Founded in 1977 by Family Service America (now the Alliance for Children and Families) and the Child Welfare League of America, they have partnered with other human service organizations around the globe to improve outcomes of delivery services.
In 2005, COA accredited or was in the midst of certifying over 1,500 private and public organizations serving more than 7 million people in countries like the United States, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, England, and the Philippines. Currently they handle accreditation in over 45 unique service areas. Among them are adult day care, services for the homeless, foster care, and inter-country adoption.
One agency recently accredited by COA is St. Elizabeth/Coleman Pregnancy & Adoption Services. They are now certified by the non-profit organization to deliver adoption services (AS) for birth parents, children, and prospective adoptive parents, inter-country adoption (ICA) for adoptive families and orphan children from other countries, and pregnancy support (PS) for expectant mothers.
