IIM B, C offer maximum weight to work experience: MBAUniverse.com analysis

(prHWY.com) January 16, 2013 - Noida, India -- The most common parameter IIMs provide weightage on during the selection process is work experience. The other parameters are gender diversity, academic diversity, marks of 10th and 12th standards, scores of graduation and post graduation, WAT, group discussion and personal interview.

Most of the IIMs try to include work experience in its selection process, as it improves the quality of student intake. However, a few IIMs do not provide weightage to work experience as a parameter.

If recent trends are anything to go by, students are opting for a definite work experience before appearing for CAT. Many working professionals too are seeking to pursue management degrees in search of better job prospects or for richer job profile.

Now let's look at the weightages provided by each of the IIMs for work experience:
IIM Ahmedabad provides 30% weightage to the application rating score during short listing of candidates. The application rating score consists of weightage given to 10th & 12th standard marks, graduation marks, post graduation marks and work experience.

IIM Calcutta provides a clear cut 8% weightage to all candidates with valid work experience in its final selection stage.

IIM Bangalore takes into account the duration of work and allots 5% weightage during the short listing stage and then provides 55 weightage in the final stage for the quality of work experience.

IIM Lucknow allocates 2% weightage out of 50 for the work experience parameter in its short listing stage. Work experience includes only paid and full-time jobs acquired after completing the bachelor's degree. Apprenticeship, articleship, internship, etc are not treated as work experience.

IIM Indore, Kozhikode & Shillong do not allocate any weightage to work experience as a parameter. On the contrary, they tend to focus more on past academic performance, PI and WAT marks.

IIM Raipur provides weightage to work experience under the heading, Profile, for creating the final merit list. Profile consists of academic profile, diversity and work experience. It has a total of 20% weightage. Work experience is allocated 30% weightage of profile weight. So, the overall weightage provided by IIM Raipur is around 6% for work experience candidates.

IIM Ranchi also provides weightage to work experience under Profile which consists of academic profile, work experience & extra-curricular activities. Profile has a total of 20% weightage. Work experience is given 5 marks out of 20; hence IIM Ranchi allots 1% for work experience in its final selection process.

IIM Kashipur's short listing criteria are similar to that of IIM Lucknow. It provides 5% weightage to work experience out of 60. Candidates with more than 30 months of valid work experience will be given the maximum weight of 5% during the short listing round.

IIM Rohtak has a unique system for allocating weightage to candidates with prior work experience. It provides the maximum score of 75 (when scores are scaled to 100). Candidates with work experience between 36 months and 47 months get the maximum score of 75. Candidates with more than 72 Months will be given '0' score and the same goes for those candidates who have less than 12 months of work experience.

Similar to IIM Raipur & IIM Ranchi, IIM Udaipur too provides weightage to Work experience under the heading Profile. Profile has a total weightage of 20%. Weightages considered under Profile are: academic profile, diversity and work experience. Work experience thereafter is allotted 30% weightage of the Profile weight which, when calculated, comes out as 6% (out of 100).

IIM Trichy allocates 5% to work experience in its final selection stage. This weightage is based on the quality and relevance of the work.

After the detailed analysis above, we find that IIM Bangalore & IIM Calcutta stand out as the ones who provide the highest weightage to any candidate having valid work experience. They are closely followed by IIM Raipur, Udaipur and Rohtak.
