Back pain is complex and often not well understood. The National Institute of Health states that in a 3-month period, about one-fourth of U.S. adults experience back pain at least once a day. Americans spend roughly $50 billion each year to treat back pain. Five percent of Americans miss at least one day of work yearly because of low back pain.
Back pain can be acute or chronic. When it comes on suddenly and the pain is extreme, it is considered acute. Some acute pain resolves on its own. But if the acute pain lessons yet persist over a period of two months or more, it is considered chronic. Chronic pain is what Rolfing Structural Integration is best able to address, since complex compensatory patterns can develop in response to injury. These patterns may establish themselves over months and years, and the process of Rolfing helps to release fixations that result from curtailed, inefficient movement.
While numerous therapies for treating back pain exist, many people turn to Rolfing Structural Integration when other methods fail. Rolfing sets itself apart from other therapies by considering the organization of the entire body and its various segments' relationship. Rolfers are specifically trained to work with fascia--the body-wide webbing network that connects, separates and supports all the muscles, bones, and organs in the body. Working to release fixations in one area can often relieve pain in another area.
In assessing and working with clients who present with back pain, Lynn Cohen considers each individual client's physical and emotional histories, as well as their natural alignment and spinal curves, which we need as shock absorbers. Some clients need help restoring spinal curvature that has become straightened, over time, as a result of injury, accident, or other trauma.
Lynn Cohen is certified to practice Rolfing in Los Angeles.
