The organization was established in 2008 in recognition of the fact that North Dakota was becoming one of the most dangerous states for employees. One of these lawyers was Gerry Spence. Since graduating cum laude from the University of Wyoming Law School in 1952, he has been standing up for ordinary citizens. His most well-known clients include Karen Silkwood and Randy Weaver, whom he both successfully defended. He has never lost a jury trial since 1969 nor a civil case from 1969 to 2010.
He is also a founding member of the Spence Law Firm, still practicing in Jackson, Wyoming. He divides his time among his firm, SAFER, and the non-profit Trial Lawyers College. This college provides weekly seminars around the country on legal defense.
