WAT Topic: UID Aadhaar - utility is more than perceived.
Essay by Candidate 1: UID Aadhaar is one of the ambitious projects of the UPA-2 government, widely perceived to be a game changer for the coming assembly polls. Through Aadhaar, the government will directly transfer the subsidies to the eligible persons.
The growing subsidy bill is a matter of concern and subsidies in most cases do not reach the poor. The UID aims to get rid of the middle men, thus ensuring the subsidies reach the right parties.
While the utility of Aadhaar is a welcome move, there are several challenges. India currently doesn't have the banking infrastructure to implement this. Also there were apprehensions that the methodology of unique identification is not a fool proof way of uniquely identifying a person. And the data, if it happens to fall in the wrong hands, there are chances of falsely implicating someone in a criminal case. Hence the threat to data security is a concern.
Although, not everything gets right in the first go. The setbacks need to be acknowledged and addressed accordingly. Many western countries have a social security number for their citizens. Aadhaar is definitely futuristic in that manner.
To sum it up, on the face of it, this could seem like a gimmick to gather votes from the poor, but the intent of the scheme is not wrong. This is a project which would take longer duration to implement it on a larger scale. Hence it also depends on the commitment from future governments to successfully implement the UID-Aadhaar across India.
Essay Evaluation by B school Admission Panel
Overall Score: 6/10
Feedback & Comments:
The essay is well written and balanced. The concluding paragraph is good. A few suggestions for improvement may be noted for future:
i)Something about Aadhaar - what it is supposed to be -in two three lines may be given.
ii)Essay is too short given the time of 20 minutes. So more versatile reading is required.
iii)Flow of thoughts is good. However, the topic has slightly been turned towards politic from its social and economic perspective. The gimmick you wish to convey, politicians would play or reap the benefit in Assembly Polls - must be amply clear to you.
iv)Impact on rural, poor population could have been discussed - focusing the issue towards the social well being.
Expert Tips on WAT:
i)Do not begin writing immediately after reading the topic. Gather your thoughts and plan how to begin, and how to form interlinking paragraphs. Begin with what you want to say.
ii)You have to make it interesting also. So think before you write.
iii)More writing practice will bring finesse in you. You have to get words on paper. So, come up with the topic/subject that most interests you then think and start writing. Not On Your Laptop/Desktop But On Paper And In Full Sentences-No Short Cuts
iv)With a lot of practice, you'll eventually get to that more confident place, a place in which your writing really sings with simple and lucid sentences and paragraphs
