Nora TeStruth of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. Named National Academy Foundation's Advisory Board Champion
SAN FRANCISCO - July 28, 2010 - McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.'s (
www.mccarthy.com) Nora TeStruth was named an Advisory Board Champion of the National Academy Foundation (NAF) based on her outstanding contributions on behalf of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). TeStruth was honored at NAF's annual awards banquet, which was held in Philadelphia, PA. NAF is an acclaimed network of career themed academies that opens doors for underserved high school students to viable careers. For nearly 30 years, NAF has refined a proven model that provides young people access to industry-specific curricula, work-based learning experiences and relationships with business professionals.
According to Frances Choun, vice president of business development of McCarthy's Northern Pacific Division, "We applaud Nora's achievement as she is certainly deserving of this honor. She has worked tirelessly as a community leader and child advocate for more than 10 years. Her role on the NAF Advisory Board has given her the opportunity to be actively involved in programs that educate, inspire and train future construction industry professionals and this commitment continues to make a major impact among Bay Area youth."
TeStruth, a project manager with McCarthy, has been actively involved with SFUSD on the NAF Advisory Board since 2006. In addition to her many contributions over the years, TeStruth spearheaded the Sustainable Building Day at Burton High School in San Francisco in March of 2010. Together, with a small team of Advisory Board members, TeStruth was instrumental in organizing an event that educated students on the importance of sustainable living, as well as career opportunities in the emerging business of sustainable building.
Other initiatives TeStruth has undertaken on behalf of NAF include increasing awareness of career opportunities in the construction industry and working with SFUSD to develop an appropriate curriculum, recruiting volunteers for NAF activities, collecting construction materials for NAF classes, and planning construction trade shows. Additionally, TeStruth is involved on an annual basis in hosting Construction Career Days in conjunction with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), where NAF students regularly participate and receive first hand exposure to opportunities in the industry.
