Learning guitar chords is a great way to start playing the guitar. There are literally hundreds of popular songs out there that can be played with just a few basic chords! Guitar chords consist of two or more different notes that are played together simultaneously. Each note in the chord has a different pitch and a different letter name.
The most basic type of Epiphone Les Paul guitar chord is an open chord. These chords are considered "open" because you are playing the chord without fretting some of the strings, thus leaving them open. Open-position chords are usually played near the nut (top) of the guitar neck.
Major and Minor Chords
Major and minor chords are the two most basic type of chords. Each one has a distinct sound that you will be able to easily identify in a short time: major chords sound bright, happy, and uplifting, while minor chords are much darker and sadder sounds.
Each chord gets it's name from their root notes (an A major chord has a root note of A). The root note is usually the note in the chord that has the lowest pitch. Major chords are referred to by a simple letter name, while minor chords have a letter name with an "m" next to it. For example, an A major chord is just written as A; an A minor chord will be written out as Am.
Telling Major and Minor Chords Apart
Whether a chord is major or mind depends on the interval (distance) between the notes in the chord. Each major and minor chord consists of three different notes. When you compare a major and minor chord with the same letter name - lets say C major and C minor - you'll see that one of the notes in the C minor chord is a half-step lower than the note in the major chord. In this case, the E becomes E flat in the minor chord.
If you're trying to distinguish from a major chord vs. a minor chord and can't hear the difference (though you should be able to), just look at the notes in the chord to see which one has the flattened note in it.
Chord Families
Chord families are collections of chords which share notes that all come from the same scale. For example, the chords in the A family are A, D, E, Bm, C#m, and F#m. The reason they are all part of the same family is because each note in every single one of these chords can be found in the the A major scale!
Here are some common chord families that you'll run into. Any combination or progression of these chords is going to sound good naturally, since the chords are musically related and not arbitrarily connected. Also keep in mind that this is not a full list of the chords in each family, just some of the easier open-position chords we talked about earlier.
C chord family: C, F, G, Dm, Em, Am
D chord family: D, G, A, Em, F#m, Bm
E chord family: E, A, B, F#m, G#m, C#m
F chord family: F, Bb, C, Gm, Am, Dm
G chord family: G, C, D, Am, Bm, Em
A chord family: A, D, E, Bm, C#m, F#m
B chord family: B, E, F#, C#m, D#m, G#m
Chord families will come into play when you are playing music in a certain key. For example, a song that is written in the key of G will mostly include chords from the G chord family. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but as a beginner you should keep this in mind.
