(prHWY.com) December 11, 2011 - Portsmouth, NH -- Portsmouth, NH- Dr. R. Brannon Claytor of Atlantic Plastic Surgery Centerattended "Breast Reconstruction: State of the Art", held by the New York University School of Medicine, Department of Plastic Surgery, November 18th and 19th, 2011, in New York City. The conference was attended by plastic surgeons with a great deal of experience in breast reconstruction from across the country. Dr. R. Brannon Claytor is highly trained in breast reconstruction surgery following cancer and has been performing comprehensive reconstructive care for women with breast cancer for 6 years.
The program addressed conditions for which reconstructive breast surgery is a woman's best option and the selection of appropriate techniques for the individual woman. The use of flap reconstruction, a common procedure using tissue from other parts of the patient's body, such as the abdomen or back, was discussed. Attention was given to incorporating the use of perforator flaps in breast reconstruction.
A highlight of the conference for many of the plastic surgeons in attendance was the technique of nipple-sparing mastectomy with breast reconstruction and the new developments that may enhance nipple sensation. Another technique on the horizon in breast reconstructive surgery, the use of fat injection was examined at length. Fat injection or fat grafting for breast reconstruction can be used for complete reconstruction or for fine-tuning or re-contouring the breast.
A new surgical option for breast cancer patients combines removal of the cancerous tumor with breast reduction in one surgical procedure called oncoplastic surgery. The benefits of oncoplastic surgery are an improved cosmetic outcome with fewer complications. This may be an option for patients who are undergoing breast conservation surgery with lumpectomy.
