(prHWY.com) January 11, 2012 - Portsmouth, NH -- Portsmouth, NH, January 3st, 2012- Dr. R. Brannon Claytor of Atlantic Plastic Surgery Center recently attended a conference at the Miami Breast Center in Miami, Florida with Dr. Roger Khouri, renowned breast reconstructive surgeon. The conference, attended by plastic surgeons from across the United States, focused on the latest options for breast reconstruction with using the patient's own tissue. The paradigm shift in breast reconstruction offers patients with breast cancer the benefit of a minimally invasive surgery with shorter hospital stays and smaller incisions. Breast reconstruction using the fat grafting technique is generally an outpatient surgery.

The technique of using the patient's own tissue uses similar technology to that used in liposuction. The areas which are the donor sites for the tissue are on the abdomen and the thighs. The fat which is harvested is then re-injected into the mastectomy site to reconstruct a breast. A negative pressure system, called the BRAVA® device is used in preparation for the fat transfer. The system works with a vacuum to generate suction on the tissue. The soft tissue swells with the negative pressure and becomes a better recipient site for the grafted fat. This technique is useful for breast tissue which is misshapen following lumpectomy surgery and also for complete breast reconstruction. The technique may require several operations. Long-term follow up is necessary.
