(prHWY.com) February 17, 2012 - Thamel, Nepal -- 17th Feb 2012 - The iconic Everest Base Camp trek is still very popular for trekkers who want to tread in the footsteps of the Mount Everest Expedition Teams, but this trek can only be undertaken during the dry season: January to May or September to December.
Jane Deakin of Private Himalaya commented "We have lots of clients who want to trek in the Himalaya but have to have to take annual leave during the June to August period. What we recommend for them to get a true Himalayan experience and visit Nepal's hidden gems is to trek in the the ancient Kingdom of Mustang.
The Kingdom of Mustang lies in the rain shadow formed by the Annapurna and Nilgiri Himalayas and thus gets very little rain which fortunately, makes the area ideal for trekking even in the mid monsoon while the other areas of Nepal remain unsuitable for trekking due to heavy monsoon rains.
Culturally it is a fascinating region, where you will journey through picturesque villages and visit historic monasteries amongst this unique landscape and get a taste of the Tibetan influence of this remote Nepalese outpost. The region of Mustang lies north of the main Himalayan range in the area known as the trans-Himalaya. A vast high valley, arid and dry, it has a barren desert-like appearance similar to the Tibetan Plateau and is characterized by eroded canyons and colourful stratified rock formations. It was once an important route for crossing the Himalaya between Tibet and Nepal, when many of the old salt caravans passed through Mustang.
Jane Deakin added "we already have a number of groups trekking in Mustang in 2012 and we see this as being a great area for trekkers to get an authentic Himalaya experience.
