Sprint Introduces the HTC Evo 4G LTE Smartphone
Sprint was the first major U.S. carrier to introduce the HTC Evo 4G LTE smartphone on Wednesday.
(prHWY.com) April 21, 2012 - Florida, MD -- Sprint was the first major U.S. carrier to introduce the HTC Evo 4G LTE smartphone on Wednesday. The HTC Evo ran on Sprint's WiMax network, an infrastructure that Sprint will soon ditch in favor of the faster speeds of LTE, adding a new phone to a stable of devices that will be compatible with the carrier's high-speed network when it launches soon in the U.S, now championed by Verizon and AT&T.

The Evo 4G LTE is a "superfast" smartphone that sets the "gold standard" in multimedia experience, said Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, during a launch event in New York City. There are companies doing innovative things with voice, such as Audience with its noise-cancelling, sound-clarifying voice technology in phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note. But in general, carriers try to cram voice calls into very skinny pipes, which reduce call quality. The HTC EVO 4G LTE runs Android 4.0 and is skinned with HTC Sense 4.0. On the front it's got a 4.5-inch super LCD high-resolution display and a 1.3-megapixel camera. And while you're kickin' back watching some video on that extra-large display, built-in Beats Audio ensures the bass is pumped up to the max. The smartphone is priced at US$199.99 with a two-year contract with the carrier. It will become available in this quarter and Sprint will start taking pre-orders on May 7.

Sprint has announced that six cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio, will get 4G LTE by midyear. The 4G LTE network will be completed in the U.S. by the end of 2013, Hesse said. Sprint already has a 4G network built on WiMax mobile broadband technology. Sprint is the only carrier that currently supports Google Wallet, so fans of the payment platform will be happy to know the EVO 4G LTE comes with NFC and Google Wallet built in. In any case, the Evo 4G LTE is indeed lovely and has a very premium feel. Black anodized aluminum on the device's lower back contrasts both the silvery ring circling the phone's edges and a bright red stripe bisecting the handset's rear. This anodized metal area is right where most of my fingers naturally formed a grip around the Evo. The Evo 4G LTE will also be the first smartphone to have a technology called HD Voice, Hesse said. HD Voice is a combination of technology in phones including dual microphones, decoders and network technology to deliver less muffled calls. It also reduces background sound to make calls clearer.

The announcement of HTC's latest comes shortly after people first started getting their hands on the HTC One X smartphone, and in fact, the EVO 4G LTE shares a number of visual similarities with the One X. It will come with Google Wallet, which uses the phone's Near Field Communications technology to let people buy products by swiping the phone against a reader at a cash register.
