Bel Marra Health comments on a recent study that shows there is a tie between light drinking and breast cancer risk

The German study which reviewed existing research has shown that even with just one alcoholic drink a day a woman's risk of breast cancer can increase by up to 5 percent. What's more, is that heavier drinking (considered to be three or more drinks a day) can increase breast cancer risk up to 50 percent, according to researchers at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Dr. Helmut Seitz, professor of medicine, gastroenterology and alcohol research at the University of Heidelberg in Germany says that 2 percent of breast cancer cases are linked with light drinking alone. He says, "women at an elevated risk for breast cancer should avoid alcohol or consume alcohol only occasionally."

The study authors drew these conclusions after reviewing 113 prior studies and suggest that healthy women at average risk of breast cancer should not consume more than one alcoholic drink a day.

The full review was published March 29 in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.

The American Cancer Society says as a general rule of thumb, if you don't drink, don't start, and women should limit their intake of alcohol to one drink a day.
