Dr. Ivan Hernandez is a board certified Physical Therapist with locations in Yonkers and Elmsford New York.
(prHWY.com) May 23, 2012 - Yonkers, NY -- The back aches, you've torn yourACL or post operative conditions are limiting your mobility. Identifying the symptoms is easy enough and moving forward addressing the issues in a Physical Therapy plan should also be standard. That's not how Dr. Ivan Hernandez of Executive Park Physical Therapy inYonkers sees it. "Asound plan is only as good as the right diagnosis," he says, and being board certified as both a Sports
Clinical Specialist and an Orthopedic Certified Specialist gives him and his patients a leg, knee and ankle up on returning to their pre-problem status. A Graduate of NYU's inaugural doctorate class in Physical Therapy, Dr. Hernandez's course of study exposed him to a wide variety of medical disciplines beyond PT studies, while giving him the opportunity to study along side top professionals in the field of physical therapy.
"I've done internships in pretty much every major hospital in New York City, shadowing
the best PTs in pulmonary care, pediatric care, geriatric care, orthopedic care and so on," he says. Getting back up to speed for his patients today begins with a comprehensive consultation to access goals and determine a treatment from an overall health status. From that, 90 minute therapy sessions proceed at 1034 North Broadway in accordance with four major treatment categories.
There are passive modalities utilizing various therapeutic treatments such as ultrasound and laser therapy. Secondly, manual therapies are enlisted by the PT to mobilize the joint and return the body to its normal range of motion. In contrast, the effort for the next grouping is put into the hands of patients with therapeutic exercises. And finally, discharge from PT does not always mean completion, as some patients must continue with an informed medical exercise plan to continue on their own road to complete recovery.
But this new doctorate program puts board certified PTs in the unique position of having
some autonomy in the healthcare arena and putting us in a position to refer to primary care physicians, as well as other medical specialists, such as orthopedists and neurologists. "Prior to 2006," he says, "we would only see patients legally with a referral. Now if someone were to hurt themselves walking down the street, they can come right into my office."
Of course, the added credentials he carries with only a handful of other doctorates operating in the field come with corresponding responsibilities. That means the back pain someone comes in with could be out the musculoskeletal realm and his background must be prepared to consider a kidney infection or maybe the possibility of cancer. In this capacity, he likes the window it gives him back to other healthcare providers in the field. "From time to time, we can be the gate keeper to the medical community," he says.
First and foremost for him and his patients, though, is the extensive range of clinical and
academic experience that he can bring to their condition. "I think in light of my credentials, I have a very solid knowledge base and basket of skills that allow me to render the best possible care to create the optimal situation to complete or nearly complete recovery process," he concludes.
