(prHWY.com) May 29, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- A life sized game of chess might sound like it came directly out of the movie Harry Potter, but for a group of chess enthusiasts that is exactly what they are planning on recreating. A group of chess enthusiasts who meet every Mondays and Fridays in a park off of Central Park in New York City, plan on making a huge life sized chess board and use actual people as pieces.
"I admit we got the idea from watching Harry Potter", said event planner, Chris Walker. "I saw the life sized wizard's chess board, and just thought that would be totally awesome if I could make one out of real chess."
While most people would use carpet squares or side walk chalk to make the board, Walker plans on creating a durable and reliable chess board made out of kitchen cutting boards. Kitchen cutting boards are the preferred choice for types of games boards, as it will last the harsh outdoor conditions, and give the players a chess board to return to time and time again.
The
kitchen cutting boards will be placed to make squares on the ground. Once on the ground, Walker and a team of volunteers will paint them black and white, just like a regular, traditional chess board.
"I want to make this something we can use on a regular basis", explained Walker. "I don't want it to be something that we do as a one-time thing, and that's it."
Walker is organizing several of his friends in which all of them will dress as various members of the game of chess. In the off chance that Walker does not get enough people to help out with the game, he has placed an ad on Craigslist inviting anyone who wishes to join to join.
"I am packing several pawn costumes for the event", said Walker. "Just in case I have people who flake out or don't want to take part in the event. Heck, I'll even pick some random guy off the street to see this dream become a reality."
This life sized version of chess will the first ever of its kind, and Walker plans on inviting the panel from "Guinness Book of World Records" to oversee the event. If they do show up, this event could land them in the history books as largest game of real life chess ever.
"It would be an honor to be a part of chess history", said Walker. "I think I would faint if it happened."
