(prHWY.com) June 18, 2012 - Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand -- Curcumin, the active ingredient of the Indian spice turmeric used in curry dishes, has been shown to offer protection against dementia and prostate cancer. The study published in the Cancer Research journal, showed evidences that the anti-inflammatory curcumin inhibits tumor growth in men with prostate cancer by blocking receptors that proliferates cell tissue growth. In another study printed in the Plus One journal, the exact mechanism on how curcumin prevents the formation of amyloid plaques in the nerve fibers was explained. Note that the presence of amyloid plaque in the nerve fibers is the trademark of Alzheimer's disease.

The research on curcumin and prostate cancer showed that curcumin molecules were able to block two genetic receptors involved in the progression of the disease. In past studies, these same receptors were shown to predict cancer incidence and growth rate of existing tumors. The study noted that Curcumin Extract potently inhibits cell cycle and survival of prostate cancer cells.

Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting men. According to cancer.org, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 241,740 new prostate cancer cases in 2012 and 28,170 of them will die of the malignancy. The cancer institute says that 1 out of 6 men will be diagnosed of prostate cancer during his entire lifetime. Men with prostate cancer suffer from the four urinary symptoms such as frequency, hesitancy, urgency, and nocturia (increased urination at night). These symptoms are the effects of the enlarged prostate exerting pressure to the urinary bladder and urethra.

In a separate research, experts found evidences about curcumin's abilities to prolong the life and enhance the activities of brain cells. This mechanism renders it a potent protective shield against the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Curcumin works by preventing the accumulation of amyloid plaques around nerve synapses. These amyloid plaques are known to interfere with the normal electrical and chemical transmissions needed to retain memory and maintain normal cognitive functions. This is the reason why people afflicted with Alzheimer's disease suffer from progressive memory loss and deterioration of cognitive abilities.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, there are 5.4 million American suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It is also estimated that one out of 8 elderly American will be diagnosed with this type of dementia.

Eating a diet rich in curcumin like curry dishes can supply the body with this cancer-fighting and neurologic support compound. Other than dietary sources, turmeric and curcumin are available in standardized supplement formulas. People at risk or those who are already diagnosed with prostate cancer and Alzheimer's disease are the best candidates to take Turmeric/Curcumin Supplements. They can also be taken by anyone who wants to maintain prostate health and optimum cognitive functions.
