Superheroes Climb Kilimanjaro Raising Funds for Sudan's Vital Health Radio Service
A group of young Catholics have successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in aid of Project 2030 to raise funds for a new radio antenna mast in Southern Sudan.
(prHWY.com) June 22, 2012 - Staffordshire, United Kingdom -- Staffordshire, UK, June 14, 2012 -- Jen Whelan, the Chaplain of Project 2030 and one of the Superheroes (aka Ninja) said "Last year we visited a local radio station in Southern Sudan where some of our group had been volunteering. The radio station is a critical part of public health information and education in Sudan where there is an 80% illiteracy rate, as well as providing local jobs and internships. Unfortunately while we were there a freak storm completely wiped out the mast. The cost to replace the mast was £10,000 and was something that the local Sudanese could not afford. This would have meant the loss of this invaluable information hub. So that was the deciding moment, we set ourselves the challenge of raising the money to replace the broken mast."
The group's next decision was just how they going to raise the funds. Fortunately one of the members had entered into Private Kilimanjaro's Annual Charity Climb competition where the best idea for a fundraising Kilimanjaro climb stunt wins a free climb. Jen came up with the idea of climbing dressed as Superheroes and went on to be one of the three winners in 2011. The team completed their climb this month. Jen Whelan commented "We had huge fun with this challenge and caused quite a stir on the mountain as other climbers had a good chuckle at Batman, Fearless Fred, Ninja, Robin and Thunderbird tackling the mighty Kilimanjaro."
"So far we've raised over £8500, with money still coming in. Project 2030 raises funds for projects that are motivated by the members. We always pay for our own travel and then funds raised go directly to the cause. Last year we volunteered in a Russian orphanage and helped decorate a few bedrooms. We raised over £1000 for the children to take part in summer camps" adds Jen.
