(prHWY.com) June 27, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- Every few years the controversy of whether a couple should be allowed to determine the sex of their baby comes up. Some medical clinics have come under immense controversy for offering the ability to allow couples to choose the sex of their child. This controversy may just be considered a thing of the past as a new one takes center stage - the ability to create twins, triplets and even quadruplets.
"We have recently discovered that there is a form of acupuncture therapy out there that can help couples determine if they have a single baby, twins, triplets and in some rare cases quadruplets", said Dr. Travis of the Center for Disease Control. "There is nothing medically or ethically wrong with this type of therapy. However, it could cause some controversy amongst some people I'm sure."
The
acupuncture of fertility therapy was originally designed for families that often had a history of multiple childbirths. In some cases, a member of the family would feel obligated to produce twins because it was in their family history. However, they were unable to do so for one reason or another.
"The acupuncture therapy stimulates the body's hormones and encourages the female's ovaries to produce more than one egg at a time", said Dr. Travis. "This process often leads to the conception of twins or triplets. In rare cases, we have had quadruplets, but that is really rare."
The acupuncture therapy has mostly been used by individuals who have had a history of fertility problems and who also had a family history of twins or triplets. A recent study suggested that 90% of all individuals who sought this type of acupuncture therapy fit into one of those categories.
"For the longest time I was trying to have a baby", said Meghan Collins. "I tried everything from hormone therapy to alternative medicine. I even tried this icky tasty tea that promised to boost my fertility. Nothing really worked. I decided to give this procedure a try, and within two months I was pregnant. It was amazing."
The feedback from the procedure has been fairly positive. Some agencies are afraid that people who don't have the financial or medical means to take care of twins or triplets will start to abuse the system and try to have multiple multi-child births.
"We don't think that will be an issue", said Dr. Travis when asked on the possibility of misuse of this treatment. "We just really do not see that becoming an issue at all around here."
