The Bidet - Its Origins and its Use in the Modern Bathroom
The word bidet is used to describe a low piece of plumbing.
(prHWY.com) July 2, 2012 - Boulder City, NV -- The word bidet is used to describe a low piece of plumbing designed like a sink used for washing the inner buttocks, genitalia and the anus. Though the device itself looks like a toilet, it is used more like a washbasin and may in fact, be used to clean any part of the body, including the feet.

The bidet was designed by French furniture makers in the 17th century, though the exact date is unknown. Some think that the furniture maker for the French royalty, Christophe Des Rosiers, invented the device, while others believe it was the creation of Marc Andre Jacoud.

The bidet was, however, a common feature in the bedrooms of French palaces and was moved to the bathrooms in the 19th century, with the improvement of plumbing facilities. In the 20th century, electronic bidets were introduced as a result of improved engineering in Korea and Japan. These contraptions came with spray hose attachments that could be connected to toilets and were suitable for modern bathrooms that lacked space and could not fit both the toilet as well as the bidet.

The bidet comes in a variety of shapes and designs. Some have a tap that pours warm water into the china basin. The basin allows the option of plugging so that it can be filled with water. Other bidets have nozzles that generate arcs of water that reach the perineal and the genital area. The latter system is regarded as being cleaner and more hygienic. The bidets themselves may be made of any kind of material, ranging from the plastic to the stainless steel.

The bidet now has widespread use, though it has often been integrated with the toilet in places where bathrooms have been made smaller, owing to restrictions of space. In these cases, the bidet has become a nozzle attached to an existing toilet and is used for cleaning only the anus and the genitalia. It comes with two nozzles, a short one used for cleaning the anus and a long one designed so that women can clean the vulvae. Some of these bidets have an additional feature - they generate warm air so that the user can be dried up.

Bidet toilets are becoming increasingly popular in countries like India, where culturally, paper has been seen as not suitable for cleaning the perineal area. Other countries like Japan have also introduced paperless toilets lately and have added bidets for this very purpose.

Another use of the Bidet is in the hospital bed and with the aging populace. These are frequently seen in homes of the aged, often with under-the-seat mounting attachments. A lot of companies are even making Bidet Attachment with remote controls that set the water spray and the air dryer into motion. Some even have advanced features like directional spray control, adjustable water pressure and temperature compensation. These are particularly favored in situations where the users have limited mobility or require assistance in movement.
