(prHWY.com) July 5, 2012 - Patiala, India -- Milling cutters are a commonly used tool to remove material within a machine at a specific angle or in a specific way. Usually, these cutters are employed and used in milling cutters or also what is commonly referred to as hobbing cutters. Milling cutters come in various shapes and sizes depending on the need, requirement and possibility of its use in a given situation or on a metal that has to be cut for that matter.

Milling cutters, as has been said above, come in various shapes and sizes. Some of them are discussed below:-

* End Mill: These cutters have cutting teeth on one end as well as on sides. These are pointed shapes with teeth to cut.

* Slot drill: Slot drills usually have only two teeth for cutting at the head side of the cutter.

* Roughing End mill: These milling cutters are so names for the way they cut into material. They cut away quickly and large chunks of metal when employed for cutting use. These cut several chips resulting in a rough surface. This rapid removal of material is also referred to as hogging.

* Ball Nose cutters: These cutters have a hemispherical end at the end instead of a flat face, which is usually case with most cutters. Hence, the name ball nose cutters. These are used for 3 dimensional cutting in metals and help to reduce the stress concentrations.

* Side and face cutter: This is perhaps the most differently designed tool for milling cutters. It is a flat circle like tool with edges throughout the circumference of the circle. This milling cutter is used to cut through horizontally and vertically. This is also the earliest developed cutter used in milling machines giving it a almost cult status among cutters.

Side and face cutters have inspired hobs. These single plates stacked one over another with improved designed and well cut edges have given way to hobbing machines. These are also what we commonly refer to as gear hobs used to cut gears for different purposes and needs. The interlinking between the two had revolutionised two industries of manufacturing milling cutters and gears. The accuracy and stealth with which these machines work are example of how simple tools can be used to make great tools. Also, the smallest of the machine part of the machine needs accuracy which these machines are helping deliver, making them safer, faster and more efficient and accurate.
