Near Vision And Cognitive Decline
Most people use reading glasses as a solution for presbyopia (near vision difficulties). Yet it is important to know all the consequences of this choice, while considering all the alternatives.
(prHWY.com) July 9, 2012 - Birmingham, United Kingdom -- Whereas relative imperfection of the distance vision is easily overlooked by many people, even slight deficiency in the near vision, termed presbyopia, is very annoying. Besides blurred near vision, the initial presbyopia symptoms may include eye fatigue after prolonged reading or headaches following any close work. As presbyopia is inevitable with aging, so is the need for reading glasses. Presbyopia, from the Greek for "aging eye," forces people of all lifestyles, including those whose lead more active or on-the-go lives to rely on reading glasses for near vision-oriented tasks.

Despite its inevitability, most people are unhappy with being dependent on enhancing lenses. Once the first symptoms of near vision deterioration appear, people try to cope in all kinds of ways. Some will try to delay the purchase of their first pair of reading glasses as much as possible and do their best to manage by extending their hands for reading or close tasks with fine details and enlarging fonts of digital information sources. Others will rush to purchase a stock of reading glasses and scatter them around their homes and offices to make sure there is always a pair at hand. Ironically though, when one is urgently needed it is still hard to find, hiding itself beneath the newspaper, between the sofa cushions or at the bottom of the handbag. On the other hand, sadly, reading glasses do not work like an umbrella for an Englishman - when you have them with you, you are likely to need using them.

Reading glasses thus become an immediately available solution, which is far from being optimal in several senses. First, the inconvenience of being dependent on an object for many daily activities which were easily performed beforehand, e.g., the reading glasses, is obvious. Second, studies show that once the use of reading glasses commences presbyopia progresses faster, therefore delaying the daily use of reading glasses is recommended. Last but not least, cognitive decline has been shown to be correlated with presbyopia, therefore highlighting the importance of treating and preventing presbyopia instead of simple coping with the symptoms with reading glasses.
