The office is comprised of three doctors: Dr. Peter R. Chung and Dr. Doreen M. Pratt, who work in adult dentistry, and Dr. Lynne W. Hsia, a dentist specializing in pediatric care.
Treating both adults and children for their dental needs is not the only factor that makes Browns Valley Dental unique. In addition to being colleagues, Dr. Peter Chung and Dr. Lynne Hsia are also domestic partners. The husband-wife team met and began dating while pursuing their undergraduate degrees at the University of California-Irvine. After graduating, the two were both fortunate to get accepted into top dental schools in the San Francisco area. The couple has been married for 6 years, although they have been together for a total of 15 years. Their union has endured several obstacles, including a 2-year long-distance relationship after Dr. Hsia's acceptance into a residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, New York to obtain full credentials in pediatric dentistry. There, Dr. Hsia was coined 'Sunshine' because of her cheerful personality, a nickname that has stuck with her after the move back to the west coast.
Today, Dr. Peter Chung and Dr. Lynne Hsia are happy to be Napa residents fulfilling their vision of providing quality dental service. Dr. Hsia is also known as 'Dr. Lynne' around the office, and she is the only female pediatric dentist in the city, a role that has given her much advantage. The children she treats are drawn to her maternal nurturing side. Her warm demeanor gains their trust and calms their fear of the 'big bad dental chair.'
The doctors' unique partnership offers them a variety of experiences.
"It's great working together," said Dr. Chung. "but it's almost like we're not because she's off doing her things with the children, and I'm working on my adult patients. So we are in the same office but we're both busy doing our own things. The advantages of course is having someone there I can trust to have our patient's best interests in mind and who will be there long-term for continuity knowing that we share the same values."
Dr. Chung also conveyed that he and his wife often talk about work exceedingly, in and out of the office. However, he's reluctant to view it as a total disadvantage.
"...that's OK once you come to an understanding that there's really no difference between work life and home life," he stated. It's just all life. So whatever comes up when it comes up is just part of life and accepting that has allowed us to be comfortable with that."
A sizable chunk of Browns Valley Dentals' clientele are loyal patients who have been with the practice before Dr. Chung was brought on by his predecessor in 2005. The previous owner never returned to the work due to health issues, and Dr. Chung assumed full ownership of the practice in 2009. Together, he and his staff have taken on the commitment of completely catering to patients' dental needs. Available dental services range from basic cleanings, x-rays and cosmetic enhancements to periodontal treatments.
Dr. Chung and Dr. Hsia aren't the only ones they know who are committed to beautifying smiles. Amazingly, dentistry runs in both of their families. Dr. Chung's father was a dentist and Dr. Hsia's brother also practices dentistry with the US Air Force.
"It's really a dental family," Dr. Chung stated.
