OMIC USA Inc.'s Analytical Laboratory Offers Expanded Arsenic Testing Services
As recent developments in the news concerning Arsenic spur congressional demand for the development of new FDA guidelines, it has become increasingly difficult for food manufacturers to know where to stand.
(prHWY.com) July 20, 2012 - Portland, OR -- Portland, OR, July 20, 2012 -- With the repeated presence of Arsenic in the news and mounting congressional demand for the development of new FDA guidelines, it has become increasingly difficult for food manufacturers to know where to stand. As regulations evolve, the next likely progression will be toward the testing of Arsenic down to parts-per-billion (ppb) levels and lower in order to differentiate between the various forms of Arsenic that are present. Amid this ongoing evolution, OMIC USA Inc. (www.omicusa.com), an ISO 17025 accredited analytical laboratory in Portland, Oregon, has purchased and validated instrumentation necessary to differentiate between these "species" of Arsenic according to the current revision of the FDA method.

In the interest of expanding the services that OMIC USA's laboratory provides to the food and beverage industry, the company this year acquired an HPLC-ICP-MS system that enabled it to add the Speciation of Arsenic to its comprehensive list of testing services. The lab, incidentally, is one of a select few in North America that offers this capability. Its validation procedure has shown quantification of both Inorganic and Organic Arsenic species to a detection limit of 5 ppb. This level is significantly lower than what any currently proposed legislation would require.

As requirements tighten and it becomes necessary to discern the dangerous, inorganic forms from the relatively more innocuous organic forms of Arsenic, this ability to speciate Arsenic will become an invaluable new resource. Speciation will require that total Arsenic first be determined. As an added benefit, in addition to Arsenic, OMIC USA's ICP-MS system will allow chemists to further reduce detection limits of other Heavy Metals (such as Cadmium, Lead, and Mercury) down to ppb levels as well.
