(prHWY.com) July 29, 2012 - Seattle, WA -- There is a saying that when a person steps into the halls of a high school or university they can almost sense the spirits of those that walked the halls before them. While this is often a metaphor for the memories and legacy alumni left to the present students, in one school in Georgia the spirit of past alumni literally line the hallways.
Hollow Grove High School underwent a recent renovation that involved retiling and repainting all the school's hallways. While most schools go for traditional colors, Hollow Grove High School decided to do something unique and line the halls with pages from the old yearbooks.
"We thought it would be a stunning way to pay tribute to past students", said student council president, Ally MacDonald. "We couldn't afford to put every student's picture in a frame, so this was the best way we could honor all the students that went to our school."
Every class for the past 100 years is represented in some way shape or form in the hallways of Hollow Grove High School. Some classes have entire classrooms dedicated to them, while others are just placed on the walls in the hallways.
"The difficult part was taking the
pages of the yearbooks and making them into something that could be decorative pieces", said interior decorate Monica Holiday. "We didn't want to ruin or distort the photos, but something had to be done so the photos would be able to last a few years."
All the pages of the former yearbooks were treated with a type of primer that allowed them to appear almost like paint. The primer didn't alter the tone or quality of the photos, but it did make them stronger.
In addition to the student photos in the yearbook, other photographs were used throughout the school. The drama room contains photos from past plays and musicals the school put on. Other photos that line the walls include that of the band and orchestra club.
"We wanted to really show everyone the history of the school and this was a great way to do it", said MacDonald. "We are planning to have an unveiling of the school's new décor when it is finished. This will allow former students to get the chance to come in and see what we've done, search for their picture and just have fun."
The unveiling of the school's new décor is scheduled for some time in September, which is right before the 2012-2013 school year starts.
